He softens when he realizes this is about Bail. It is one of those things he knows to never touch, one of the subjects that is sacred as the broken asteroid graveyard of Alderaan. That Anakin of all people stepped all over it makes this that much worse an infraction.
Of all the things he knew Anakin could be, the things he might become, 'thoughtless idiot' obviously hadn't been high enough on the list in terms of concern.
